Surgical Orthodontics in Canton & Woodstock, GA
Surgical orthodontics, or orthognathic surgery, is used to correct severe jaw alignment issues that can’t be resolved with braces alone. These include significant bite problems, jawbone discrepancies, and facial asymmetry. Once jaw growth is complete—typically around age 16 for girls and 18 for boys—your orthodontist may recommend jaw surgery to achieve better function, aesthetics, and long-term oral health.
If surgery is part of your treatment, we’ll work closely with a trusted oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Braces are placed before surgery to begin aligning your teeth. The surgery itself is performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia and usually requires about two weeks of recovery. After the jaw heals, we’ll continue adjusting your bite with braces, which are typically worn for another 6 to 12 months before being removed. A retainer follows to help maintain your results.
The rewards can be life-changing—orthognathic surgery can dramatically improve your bite, speech, appearance, and overall confidence. If you’ve been told your case may need more than braces, let’s talk. We’re here to help you understand your options and create a plan that fits your goals.
